With their Seventh Round pick, their final of the weekend, the San Diego Chargers selected wide receiver Demetrius Byrd from Louisiana State University. Their third LSU receiver in the last five years, and he stands 6'0' tall and weighs 190 pounds.

Overall Football Traits
Production2Byrd played at Pearl River Community College for two seasons before transferring to LSU in 2007. He played in all 14 games in 2007 catching 35 passes for a total of 621 yards (17.7-yard avg.) and a team-leading seven touchdowns. Byrd started 11 of the 13 games he appeared in catching 37 passes for a total of 513 yards and (13.9-yard avg.) and four touchdowns.
Height-Weight-Speed2Adequate height, adequate bulk and above-average top-end speed.
Durability2Durability is not a concern to our knowledge.
Character4Originally signed with FIU out of high school but attended Pearl River C.C. for two seasons instead. There have been no off-the-field issues to our knowledge but multiple scouts have informed us of considerable concerns regarding his 'football character' and 'work ethic'.
Wide Receiver specific Traits
Separation Skills3Explodes off the line and quickly eats up any cushion. Savvy vertical route runner that uses head nods to set up breaks and keep defensive backs off balance but needs to run crisper short-to-intermediate routes. Rounds off too many cuts. Doesn't appear to make accurate pre-snap reads or sound adjustments to the blitz. Can do a better job of working back to the quarterback when protection starts to break down.
Ball Skills3Long arms and he consistently catches passes thrown over head. Flashes the ability to bend knees and scoop passes thrown below knees. Generally catches ball away from frame. Times jumps well, adequate leaping ability and flashes the ability to highpoint the ball. Did a better job of making plays in traffic in 2008 (see 2008 Florida game) but focus is inconsistent and still drops some passes that should catch.
Vertical Speed2A true vertical threat that can get over the top of defensive backs and run under the ball. Tracks the deep ball well.
Run After Catch3Silky smooth runner with a second-gear but more of a vertical threat than a run-after-catch weapon. Lacks ideal vision. While flashes the ability to make the first defender miss not overly elusive. Doesn't consistently pick up yards after contact.
Competitiveness and Toughness3Not afraid to go over the middle and expose body to big hit. Flashes a mean streak when blocking but effort and technique are inconsistent. Needs to hit the weights and get stronger. Can get caught watching the play. Runs out of bounds when could fight for extra yards.
